SONG DETAILS

Patience, my friend
i’m going to tell you
things you might already know

slowly, waiting.
what feels like the first time
is always the first thing to go

watch these days will slip away
just when you think they will stay
picture perfect only proves
same ol’ rains will fall on you

over in the corner
all the people in the room cower
and they yell and they scream for hours

and they waste all the moments they’re given
just like snakes, they make noise ‘til they’re bitten
with hearts broken, they’re all frozen smiles
they’re frozen but nobody notices
they’re frozen but nobody notices why

watch these days will slip away
just when you think they will stay
picture perfect only proves
same ol’ rains will fall on you

watch these days and watch these memories slip away
picture perfect only proves same ol’ rains will fall on you

patience, my son
I’m going to tell you….everything.

Wrote this on a piano. Perhaps obviously.

I had John Lennon in mind, sonically (it’s ok if you don’t hear it). Lyrically, the emotion is reflective, and the words represent a sort of generational switch/change/…of the guard…of the passing of time. The singer counsels patience, yet reflects at how quickly life slips by. Gotta love the irony that is existence.

Always had a saxophone in mind for the solo. I thought of Mean Streets when considering how it would resonate sonically. My favorite part of this song (while writing it) is the bass part. It was very simple initially; I had only intended to follow the chords. But after Brian did a few takes on the drums, I suggested he just free ball it at the end. Let it swing, let it go.

Later, I compiled a proper take and just love how off center it was. I immediately picked up the bass and just kept sculpting this passing tone of a part. one that moved with the motion and waves of the drums. What an experience it was hearing it come out and work right. Very present tense, meaning that there was no forethought; it was just=go.

Love that.

Cool Geekout Notes

God, I love this guitar sound. Mike harkened back to the records his Dad had him grow up on (I want to say it was Chet Atkins). Just loved how hollow the sound of his performance was. Like it resonated out of this big ol’ tree.

First time ever recording a Saxophone. Richard performed fantastically. At one point, after taking quite a while to do the main solo, I asked him to just go nuts at the end. That he did. One take. After the last tone’s breath finished, I hit pause on the recorder…looked at him….and said: “are you fucking KIDDING me??”
He looked at me as I looked at him. One take. Brilliant.
