SONG DETAILS

Amen

You finally got up the nerve to try to get away
Amen
Maybe she dared you to make your move
but you had to open up your mouth again
and the words that spilled out made you look real good
Don’t you know when it’s time to give up, my friend?
To give up? To give in?

Maybe I’ll forgive, but I won’t forget
No, I won’t forget, no I won’t forget

Amen
Walk down the street, trip…trip…and trip again
Amen
Don’t look now; your life is going past you
Wanna open up your mouth again?
If you find what they look, they will take you away
But it looks so sweet and saccharine
If it’s true, then give in

Maybe I’ll forgive, but I won’t forget
No, I won’t forget, no I won’t forget

“I’m sorry too”
The words we never use
Try to breathe, you choke on your own fumes
But they’re watching you
to see if you come through
‘Cause they think you look better “feeling blue.”

The essential chords, melodies and hook for Forgive+Forget was actually written at least 4 years previous to its release. On acoustic guitar, and much MUCH slower, it felt a lot like a country song (the chorus, I mean).
I recorded it on an old Roland VS 1880, and there it sat.

‘Til, of course, the day it was time to sell the old 1880 in favor of new recording equipment. Fast forwarding to just this past year, I decided to transfer all essential tracks, including any old ideas that I thought had value, to my new Pro Tools hard drive.

And along came Forgive+Forget. “Oh yea, I remember this one, this sounds like a country song!”

However, I quickly grabbed my acoustic and sped up the tempo about 90 million beats per minute. (Well, you get the point.) It now had a completely fresh approach; I had to finish the lyrics and it just needed a bridge.

I had a separate piece of material (“I’m sorry too, the words we never used”) which I just loved how the melody focused on the 5th of the chord. I just had to change the key, and provide a segue out. This became the bridge for the song. Funny thing is, this melody was handwritten on a scratch piece of paper as I didn’t have anything to quickly sing into at the time. But it still stuck, and kept asking me to put it in the game.

Put me in, coach…

Cool Geekout Notes

The theme melody at the intro of the song and just after the 1st chorus is not a synth part, it is actually a guitar. I turned the speaker off to get an old overdriven channel distortion style, gated the F*ck out of it, and played it on the guitar to get the bends and slides I heard in my head.
