Today, the Supreme Court ruled in an 8-1 opinion to protect hateful protests at military funerals.
We must trust and have confidence in our ability to distinguish right from wrong. We must not punish speech just because what someone said was hateful, stupid, ignorant, or profoundly insane. It’s still just speech.
We must also trust in our ability to be the better person, to be the better teacher to our children and for the views of good people to win in the long run. Hate speech dies without water just like every other living thing. Stop feeding it life and it’ll become insignificant. As it should.
I believe that freedom of speech means that we must zealously protect the rights of even the lowest, most vile participants. This qualifies.
The Supreme Court got it right.
