a weekend of writing…

“When all else fails, just get back on the horse.”

I was pretty busy this weekend, and I think I only left the house to 1: Go see the FSU v Duke game and 2. get some groceries.

Starting on Friday, I  began writing again. I had previously been so busy doing the simulcast, or preparing for a show, or a million other things, that I had not the time to really–I mean REALLY–sit down and work on new material.

My previous attempts have been a little on the fruitless side. Mostly because the songs I have been working on
are frustrating beyond compare. Not because they suck; more so because I found they don’t. It’s primarily because I can’t seem to finish them.

So, I found myself like one of those robot vacuum cleaners that just keeps bumping into the wall, not knowing how to buzz around to the right or left and continue.

And that gets old.

So, I’m just sitting down…and writing.

I watched an AMAZING movie on Friday night called Crash. I had heard about it and about its controversial subject matter and tone. It’s extremely compelling if you allow yourself the nature of how it’s conveyed to you. It almost feels ‘essay’ in tone. There are at least two scenes which will jar the fuck out of you. Oh man.

So, this inspired me to begin work on a new song called “Push.” We shall see how that goes. I put down chords after I finished watching the movie (and very quietly at that as it was late). The next day, spent some time on it hashing out some melodies and some drum & piano parts.

Sunday, the song moved along a lot further to a point where it asks to be critiqued. Sort of the place I get to in every song where I challenge myself on what can be or should be improved. Right now I really like the verses. (Which has been a theme in my writing recently). I’ll go home tonight and check it out again. I didn’t have enough time to do a quick “listen in the car” mix. I’ll have that for Tuesday’s drive to work.

More than anything, I’m just happy to be on the horse. I have to think big picture, and not worry about creating a masterpiece everytime.

Just…start…writing.
