trading up

Worked on music yesterday. And the day before. And the day before.

And more tonight.

So, the reason I’ve been so busy the last week or so is…. I just invested coin in a new computer system… just for my studio. My laptop just wasn’t hanging anymore. It gave me good life for the past year or so but lately–what with new versions of Reason and Pro Tools–it just wasn’t keeping up.
Latency issues, not being able to run enough plug ins. Crashes etc…

So, I made the plunge.

**Geek alert**
A desktop, it’s called the Creation Station, made by a company called Sweetwater.
The stats are as follows:
3.2g Pentium 4, 2 gigs of RAM, Two hard drives (one for system files: 80 gigs; one for audio files: 200 gig). Lots of other bells and whistles as the system is customized for recording audio, but that’s the main info.

So, I spent Friday night re-installing all my software and getting it up and running.

Viva. La. Difference.

Oh, and I plunked down and got a Universal Audio m610 Mic Pre. Based on the Modular console from back in the 60’s, this thing sounds amazing. I plan on running everything through it when I track. (Hmm…what’s a Mic pre? Besides short for Microphone Pre-amplifier? Click here.)

So, Saturday and Sunday was spent “getting an idea” of it all, and setting up and optimizing my system so I didn’t have to do it later.
I’m just about to the point that i can start recording without having to think about “what about this” and what about that.

Oh, but I have been recording alright. Almost immediately, I started laying down tracks for two songs I’m working on. Part of the learning process. Kill two birds…

One of them will be a surprise. You’ll find out soon, very soon.

And if being majorly in debt wasn’t enough of a motive to not be more in debt, just to throw salt in my credit card wound, I got a 20″ Dell LCD monitor. If it’s any consolation, I found it for about $250 cheaper on Ebay (new no less).

So, my system is ready; ready to go. Where?

We shall see…stay tuned!

Post script: don’t mourn the loss of the Toshiba laptop my friends; she will still sail the seas of the Internet cable style and provide me with plenty of web site creating muscle!
