Information overload...

Read this article. The concept for this album is insane. Probably the most ambitious and original thing a musician has done in the modern internet age.

Quote:
"My goal is that the music can be interpreted with the richest context. So what I'm immersed in is a way to achieve that. Now that albums have gone from 12 inches of real estate with artwork and a whole aesthetic, to CDs, which are ugly and disposable, to nowadays just being a file on a computer, it's led me to putting a lot of thought in to ways to present music that still makes it feel important and that has depth and purpose."

Quote:
"This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere. That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more," Reznor said in the statement. "I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don't. This record is the latter. Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place ... as if it were meant to be. ... The record turned out to be more than a just a record in scale, as you will see over time.

"Part one is Year Zero. Concept record. Sixteen tracks. What's it about? Well, it takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop," he continued. "The world has reached the breaking point — politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth."

Also, according to FMQB, "Year Zero will be the first of two concept albums, and the second one will be released probably in 2008."

Genius...

That was an interesting read. All of it. Thank you, Kevin.

This sort of seems to go beyond a marketing stunt to get as many copies sold (as is also admitted in the above quotes) but in addition to a previous promise that this record will be absolutely not what anything ever sounded like it makes a pretty strong case that this album will just be... different.

I can say in advance that the critics are not going to like this album the way I hear and have heard Reznor talk about the album. It's just a new concept that will not even be appreciated much by the mass audience who even think fluffy marshmallow music is too heavy to swallow. Even I will probably first go like: "What is this?!?!" I think we ought to reach beyond the noise, literally.

Here is some additional info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Zero_%28album%29

Also, two of the tracks ("Survivalism" and "My Violent Heart") have been leaked to the internet mostly likely as part of the campaign.

USB drives have been "leaking" into bathroom stalls across Europe. And according to Trent, it's all a part of the record's concept...

Quote:
"What you are now starting to experience IS 'year zero'. It's not some kind of gimmick to get you to buy a record - it IS the art form... and we're just getting started. Hope you enjoy the ride."

I just heard two songs and I was not impressed. Sad The last record blows it away. It'll be interesting to see whether the entire concept overrides this initial impression...

I defy you, Chance, not to be impressed by the latest leak: In This Twilight

Only 3 and a half minutes long. Simple, beautiful melodies. I don't think his voice has ever sounded this good. Very powerful production/noise. Pretty sad/moving overall. Lyrically it's a lot more positive than what NIN fans are probably used to. I think he's writing from the perspective of someone who's trying to look on the bright side of the end of the world, but at the same time wishes he/we could try again.

Oh, and the album art can be viewed here.

The album art is just... vague It fits the music and general concept though.

I've only heard "In This Twilight" now (did take me more than one time to get the idea but that's what I already predicted above). It appears that at least this song is constructed of many hard-to-place sounds, "noise" as you will, which Trent said to be the inspiration to this album to begin with.

Playing the first part of the song fast comes across as it being constructed of piano or guitar with a rasp. It's being played at less than 25% of its original speed, because I can't construct a true sound out of it at 400% (which is the maximum acceleration my player allows).

So it makes me curious to what extent this album can be performed live.

I'm all about the Constitution. If only the people who run this country felt the same.

I had the Constitution on my myspace but it confused some people.

Sorry for the diversion!

The NIN page has a fourth track now.

The Survivalism multitrack file rules! You get Survivalism broken down into 49 partial tracks so you can listen to the song bit by bit. I highly recommend Survivalism GTR wah outro.aif for instance, and for the weird bit at the beginning that sounds like bees, Survivalism OB seq V1.L.aif.

Got it yesterday. There's a hilarious warning sticker on the back that reads:

Consuming or spreading this material may be considered subversive by the United States Bureau of Morality. If you or someone you know has engaged in subversive acts or thoughts, call 1-866-445-6580. BE A PATRIOT- BE AN INFORMER!

Also, there is a cool "thermochrome" lacquer on the disc that changes from dark gray to off-white under heat, revealing binary ones and zeros that when translated into ASCII read "exterminal.net". Just another piece to the increasingly deep ARG puzzle.

I want to hear what you all think of it first, so I'll save my track by track review for later. For now I'll leave you with a few opinions...

Lyrically it's more focused than anything he's ever done. The Downward Spiral was one man's brilliant attempt to challenge the point of living, whereas Year Zero is a celebration of what one man can accomplish when he sobers up in order to challenge the forces that attempt to control the thoughts and actions of people. In a way it's the Anti-Fragile. With teeth, without fear.

Launch Radio Networks reports: NINE INCH NAILS could sell more than 200,000 copies of its new album, "Year Zero", in its first week of release, according to sales tracking by Hits Daily Double. The disc, which was released on Tuesday (April 17), could enter the Billboard album chart at No. 2 next week, with AVRIL LAVIGNE's new offering expected to debut in the top spot. The last NINE INCH NAILS effort, 2005's "With Teeth", did debut at No. 1 on the chart with first-week sales of 272,000 copies.
